KARACHI: PMA shows concern over pollution

KARACHI, March 26: Noise pollution is at its highest level in some parts of the city and a lot of adult and children are suffering from deafness and other noise related problems. These views were expressed during the monthly meeting of Pakistan Medical Association’s Executive Committee at PMA House on Saturday. Referring to the extremely serious situation of environmental pollution in the city, the committee members said that increased smoke emission of carbon mono-oxide and lead in atmosphere was causing cancer, chronic irritation of respiratory tract and mental retardation in children. The lead-loaded environment was extremely dangerous for pregnant women as well, they said.

The committee members observed that pressure horns, rickshaw without silencer and heavy traffic were directly responsible for noise pollution in congested parts of the city.

The PMA appealed to the governor and city nazim to take appropriate measures for the betterment of environment. —PPI
