ASI, five others booked in torture case

By Our Correspondent

SAHIWAL, March 22: Noor Shah police on Monday night registered a case of kidnap, torture and violation of the Police Ordinance-2002 against an ASI and five constables of Tandlianwala police station on the orders of the Lahore High Court. The accused are still at large. The accused ASI, Muhammad Ashraf, along with five constables entered the house of a grower, Thiraaj, in Bothna village on the night of Dec 4, 2004. The policemen allegedly beat the women inmates, looted valuable from the house and locked up the grower at Tandlianwala police station.

On an appeal made by the wife of the grower, the Lahore High Court deputed a bailiff, who recovered the grower on Dec 13. Later, on the court orders a medical examination of the grower was conducted, which confirmed torture.

The LHC then ordered registration of a case against the accused police officials. Noor Shah police registered a case accordingly under section 458, 365 PPC, 337-Islamic law and 156/CD of the Police Ordinance-2002, without arresting the accused.

BLACKLISTED: The Punjab home department has blacklisted a contractor, Rana Riaz Ahmed, for supplying unhealthy beef for consumption of the prisoners in the central jail, Sahiwal. The department has ordered appointment of a veterinary doctor at the jail to check such practice in future.
