Hill torrent toll rises to 41

By Tariq Saeed Birmani

DERA GHAZI KHAN, March 19: Death toll in Friday’s Suleman Range hill torrent rose to 41 on Saturday. The tragic incident had occurred on Friday evening when a tractor-trolley packed with 69 devotees, including women and children, was returning from Zinda Pir shrine. The shrine is situated near the beds of Soori Lond and Wash Garri hill torrents in the mountains of Tuman Lond, 70km from here. Violent waters of Wash Garri torrents swept away the tractor-trolley at 5.30pm. 28 devotees, including tractor driver Ashiq, survived the incident. The survivors, with bodies of their relatives and friends, had to wait for relief operation under the open sky for at least 24 hours. Local tribal people and shopkeepers of the shrine’s makeshift bazaar rushed to the spot and started the rescue work. They recovered 41 bodies from an area spreading in a radius of 10 to 11 kilometres. Devotees always use the bed of hill torrent as there is no road which leads to the shrine.
