KARACHI: More research on flora urged

KARACHI, March 18: About 85 per cent of the Pakistani flora has been published which is a monumental achievement. This was stated by the Dean of Karachi University’s Faculty of Science, Prof Dr Mohammad Qaiser, while delivering a lecture on the ‘Flora of Pakistan’.

The talk was organized by the Karachi chapter of the Pakistan Academy of Sciences at the Department of Botany, University of Karachi. Prof Qaiser emphasised the need of further research in this field in order to revise the available data on the flora on a regular basis to conform the taxonomic data to the new information constantly being added.

He deplored that the expertise that had been gained in the field had not been properly utilized in protecting the flora. Prof Qaiser called for the classification of the plants that were found in various areas of the country.—APP
