KARACHI, March 15: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday issued notices to the AG Sindh, the home secretary, the DIG CID and others for March 22 on a petition challenging the detention of a pesh-Imam by the law-enforcement agencies.
Ibrahim Rais submitted that his nephew Moulvi Amanullah Rais, a pesh-imam of Baghdadi Jamia mosque and madarsa Khulfa-i-Rashideen in Mauripur, had been taken into custody by the law-enforcement agencies on March 9 in the presence of students of the madressa.
It was pointed out in the petition that the detainee was earlier arrested twice by the police in May and June 2004 and subsequently released on filing of petitions before the Sindh High Court against his illegal confinement.
The petitioner stated that the whereabouts of the detainee were still unknown despite the fact that telegrams were sent to session judges, IGP and other concerned government officials. He said that the act of the respondents was unlawful.
Naming the home secretary, DIG CID, DIG (Operation), DSP CID and CCPO as respondents the court was prayed to direct the respondents to produce the detainee before court and release him if not involved in any case.
SHC’s division bench, comprising Chief Justice Saiyed Saeed Ashhad and Justice Maqbool Baqar, after preliminary hearing issued notices to the AG, as well as respondents for March 22.—PPI
