LARKANA: Protest against water projects

By Our Correspondent

LARKANA, March 14: Activists of the Jeay Sindh Mahaz took out a procession on Monday in protest against the proposed projects of greater Thal canal and Kalabagh dam.

Central leaders of the party, Dr Barkat Jatoi and Amar Junejo, led the protesters who marched on the main roads of the city.

They carried banners and placards with slogans against the big dams. They gathered outside the press club.

Speaking on the occasion, the JSM leaders accused Punjab of ‘robbing’ Sindh’s water by constructing greater Thal canal and Kalabagh dam.

They alleged that the federal government was ignoring unanimously passed anti-Kalabagh dam resolutions of three assemblies while supporting the Punjab demand.

DCO: DCO Abdul Razzaque Qureshi and Taluka Nazim Nazir Ahmed Shaikh inaugurated campaign ‘clean and green Larkana’ from the union council-11 on Monday.

Addressing the gathering in the council’s office, he said the devolution plan demanded people’s participation at all levels.

Appreciating efforts of the sanitary staff for cleanliness in the city, he said they contributed a lot towards improving hygienic condition in the city.

He said the campaign could only be successful when the taluka municipal administration would work jointly with all departments ensuring the participation of elected representatives, nazims and councillors of the area.

Taluka Nazim Nazir Ahmed Shaikh welcomed the step and offered full cooperation in keeping the city clean and green.

Mr Shaikh said it was joint responsibility of the residents of the city to make the drive a success.

UC-11 nazim Ibrahim Soomro thanked the DCO for choosing the union council for the purpose.

He said officials concerned were ignoring the union council and despite repeated approaches they remained indifferent whereas people’s problems had multiplied.

The DCO and the taluka nazim planted saplings in the premises of the union council.

All district heads, representatives of NGOs, social workers, prominent citizens and a large number of sanitary staff of the city participated in the inaugural ceremony.
