KARACHI, March 13: Sindh government has spent Rs237.844 million up to June 2004 on the revamping of irrigation and drainage system in Sindh.
The approved cost of the project was Rs12.963 billion and after approval by ECNEC in August 2003, it is being executed by Sindh irrigation and power department to complete it by the year 2007-08.
The main objective of the project is to improve the operational efficiency of the irrigation system by ensuring the safety of canal system and delivering due share of water to farmers at the tail reaches of canals with adequate drainage cover.
The project envisages strengthening of 8082km of cannal and drain banks, silt clearance of 3685km, stone pitching of 380km of canal banks, remodelling of 241 regulators, and rehabilitation of 201 bridges.
The project also envisages repair and extension of 11,725 modules, revamping of 1493 tubewells, re-boring of 103 tubewells, and replacement of 211 transformers and re-sectioning of 568kms of surface drains.
Official sources say 100 per cent work has been done on designing, alignment confirmation, and environment impact assessment study.—APP
