MOHALI, March 11: Indian great Sunil Gavaskar has criticized Pakistan’s fielding in the first cricket Test at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium and termed it as “worse than a schoolboys’ team”.
Writing for the Hindustan Times, the former Indian captain said that the foremost question in the minds of all cricket watchers would be where they learned their fielding.
“It is never easy to dismiss a strong batting line-up like India and then to give them more than one bite of the cherry is asking for trouble and that’s what the Pakistanis got.”
“The Pakistan bowlers had to toil on Thursday’s third day of the Test and all of them got hammered before recovering late in the day to take three wickets as the home side finished on 447 for six.
“They let of Virender Sehwag no less than four times and every single opportunity was catchable by any standards,” he commented.
“It was as if Pakistani fingers were greasy with the Punjabi ghee that they would apply on their rotis, so easily did the ball slip through them.”
He said that the Pakistan fielders were also guilty of not protecting boundaries and Sehwag was able to thrash his way around with another big century.”
Sehwag scored 173, his 9th Test century in 32 Tests and the second against Pakistan.
The dashing batsman also has India’s only triple century to his credit.
