KARACHI, March 10: The vice-chancellor of the University of Karachi, Dr Pirzada Qasim, said on Thursday that activists of student groups should show restrains in their activities on the campus, otherwise they would be subjected to stern disciplinary actions.

Talking to Dawn after his meeting with the representatives of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) and All Pakistan Muhajir Students Organization (APMSO), at his office Dr Qasim said that the present administration of the university believed in dialogue and interaction with students as well, but that should not be taken as any administrative weakness of the university.

He said that latest clashes between the two groups of students on the campus were uncalled for and administration was taking measures to check such incidents in future.

The student leaders from the two sides, who met me today, have regretted on the hostilities they had shown against each other on Tuesday and Wednesday and promised that they would not create any law and order situation on the campus in future, he added.

To a question, Dr Pirzada said that teachers of the university should also maintain their neutral posture and not to be partial at any stage, despite their political, social or ideological adherences. The students’ adviser of the university, Syed Rais Ahmad, has been asked to continue meeting the two groups in order to sort out their differences, if any, he mentioned.

Meanwhile, in a press release the KU spokesman said that teaching process in all the departments continued normally and no untoward incident was reported on Thursday. The attendance was around 98 per cent in the morning, while evening classes were also held in a peaceful atmosphere.

Both the student groups called on the vice-chancellor during the day and expressed their regrets on yesterday’s incident and assured him of maintaining sanctity of the campus. Examinations were held as per schedule, while sports activities were also observed as normal, the spokesman added.
