MQM seeks more relief goods for rain victims

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, March 10: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Thursday appealed to the government and NGOs for more relief to the flood and rain affected people of Balochistan, NWFP and Azad Kashmir, saying that the assistance provided to them so far was not adequate.

Ms Nasreen Jaleel, a member of the MQM coordination committee, addressing a news conference at the Karachi Press Club, gave details of her party’s efforts for providing relief to the affected people under the directives of Altaf Hussain.

She recalled that on Feb 24, the coordination committee had announced distribution of relief goods worth Rs20m in Balochistan, NWFP and Azad Kashmir where thousands of people had been rendered homeless by rain, floods and heavy snowfall.

She said that four relief teams – headed by Dr Farooq Sattar, Anwar Alam, Abdul Haseeb and Kunwar Naveed – along with some federal ministers, had been sent to the affected areas for relief operation.

She stated that the relief teams had managed to reach some of the affected people by negotiating the most difficult terrain while even helicopters had been pulling back due to bad weather.

The team led by Dr Farooq Sattar had gone to Quetta and Pishin and distributed relief goods and cash among the victims. It also visited Qila Abdullah, Chaman and other areas for similar operations. The relief goods included quilt, eatables, medicine, etc., she added.

The other team headed by Kunwar Naveed visited Lakki Marwat, Mansehra, Swabi and adjoining areas in the NWFP and distributed relief goods among the affected people.
