Bangle units urged to implement labour laws

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, March 10: National Labour Federation president Rana Mehmood Ali Khan has criticized non-implementation of labour laws by the district’s glass bangle industry.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, he said thousands of workers of the industry had been deprived of their legal rights.

He regretted that bangle industry workers were neither being issued appointment letters nor were they being given attendance cards. In absence of any documentary proof, widows of deceased employees were deprived of Rs200,000 of group insurance and of Rs100,000 of death grant. Not only this, the widows were also deprived of monthly pension under the old-age benefit scheme, he added.

He said despite protests by workers, no action had been taken in the matter by the labour department and the social security institution.

He said the NLF would soon file a complaint with the International Labour Organization, Geneva, underlining problems of the workers.

He called for implementation of labour laws by the bangle industry.
