Dhaka-Delhi border guards trade fire

By Our Correspondent

DHAKA, March 9: Tension mounted on Bangladesh-India border again on Wednesday as border guards of the two countries traded gunfire at three points _ Lalmunirhat, Kurigram and Khagrachhari.

Bangladeshi officials blamed the Indian troops for the deteriorating situation, saying that they were trying to carry out work on a 4,000-km fence along the Bangladesh border.

The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) took up positions along the border to 'counter the barrage' from India's Border Security Forces (BSF), a BDR spokesman said. Military officials from the two sides held a flag meeting on Monday, but failed to reach an understanding. A Bangladeshi and his five-year-old son were injured in the exchange of fire.
