KARACHI, March 7: Karachi Port Trust (KPT) kept their hopes alive of remaining in first-class cricket next season when they took third day's honours in the Patron's Trophy Pool 'A' match against PIA at the UBL Sports Complex on Monday.
After taking a pretty useful first-innings lead of 113, KPT reduced PIA to 216 for four going into Tuesday's final day. Leg-spinner Mansoor Ahmed captured three of the wickets to fall in PIA's second innings to take his match haul to nine.
Asif Mujtaba (11) and Bazid Khan (9) were at the crease at draw of stumps with PIA leading by just 103 with six wickets intact and skipper Moin Khan, who scored 107 in the first innings, still to bat.
PIA, the Pool 'A' leaders who are already through to the semi-finals, lost seasoned campaigner Ghulam Ali cheaply once again. But Kamran Sajid followed his first innings century with another good knock of 74.
The left-handed opener, who hit seven fours, was involved in a third-wicket partnership of 122 with Test reject Faisal Iqbal. Faisal, nephew of great Javed Miandad, made a stylish 76 off only 84 balls with the help of 10 boundaries.
Earlier, Rashid Hanif struck a career-best 64 not out to take KPT past the 400-run mark. Medium-pacer Aizaz Cheema shared limelight with Rashid by taking his best figures in first-class cricket when he took six for 149 in 43.3 overs on a sluggish pitch. KPT need maximum points from this last round match to lift themselves from the bottom spot in this pool.
