ISLAMABAD, March 1: The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) on Tuesday sought logistic support from Pakistan for its forces operating in Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf).

The request was conveyed during a meeting held here between Nato Deputy Secretary General Alessandro Minuto Rizo and Defence Secretary Hamid Nawaz. The two sides agreed to a follow-up visit by a technical delegation of Nato to find a modus operandi to provide the logistic support.

"It was discussed that a technical delegation of Nato would visit Pakistan soon to find out a mutually agreed modus operandi for fostering mutual cooperation in this regard," said a press release issued by the defence ministry.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Nawaz said Pakistan and Nato shared common perceptions on global peace and security. Pakistan would like to cooperate with Nato on issues of mutual interest like war against terrorism and fighting global terror threats, he added.

The defence secretary informed the delegation that Pakistan was supporting peace and stability in Afghanistan and was providing as much assistance as possible in the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan. He pointed out that Pakistan had already announced $100 million grant for reconstruction activities.

The Nato deputy secretary-general appreciated the role of Pakistan in providing logistic support to Isaf and assistance for reconstruction activities in Afghanistan. He also lauded Pakistan's role in recent Afghan elections.
