LAHORE, March 1: An alleged robber was killed and two policemen injured in an encounter at Shaukat Town in the Factory Area on Tuesday night. Police said three gunmen entered the house of a property dealer, Shaikh Anwar.
His son Lutfullah who was talking to his friend by phone told the latter about the situation. The friend informed the police who rushed to the scene and ordered the intruders to surrender.
Instead, the dacoits opened fire which was retaliated by the police. In the shootout, one of the intruders, so far unidentified, was killed while the other two managed their escape.
Of them, the police believed, one had got bullet wounds. Two policemen, Amir Abbas and Amanat Ali, also sustained bullet injuries and were taken to hospital where their condition was stated to be serious.
ARRESTED: Police claimed on Tuesday to have arrested nine alleged robbers of two gangs. Claiming that the arrested men confessed to 58 crimes against property, the police said, they were rounded up in three raids conducted on a tip-off.
Three members of one of the gangs were arrested by Sadar division (organized crime) police. They included Muhammad Bilal, Muhammad Suleman and Zubair Khan who were involved in 43 crimes.
Two mausers, a rifle and scores of bullets were seized from them besides, valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees. Six members of the other gang were held from Allama Iqbal Town, who were wanted by the police in 15 robberies for several months.
They have been identified as Hafiz Adnan, Munawar, Saleem, Zeeshan, Mudassar and Ashfaq. Four pistols and bullets were recovered from them. Further investigation is under way.
FOUND DEAD: A security guard was found murdered in a textile mills in Chuhng. The police said Noor Gull, 42, had been working at the mills for long. His body was lying in a pool of blood when a fellow worker visited him.
