KHAIRPUR, Feb 26: A lecture on "Foreign policy of the USA in the second term of President George W. Bush" was organised by the department of international relations in the Shah Abdul Latif University here on Saturday.

Director of the Area Study Centre for Africa, North and South America, Quaid-i-Azam University, Professor Dr Mohammad Islam delivered keynote lecture.

He said that Americans wanted to see "tyrannical" regimes like Iran and Syria to go and its next target would be Pakistan, adding that the Bush administration was waiting for an appropriate time and pointing out that it had not the country recognized as a nuclear power.

He discussed three-pronged strategy of the Bush administration, including fight against terrorism and weapons of mass destruction, promotion of democracy in the Middle East and control on the use of nuclear weapons.

He said that the US administration was trying to mend fences with the European Union and linking democracy with peace in the Middle East.

He said that President Bush had made extensive efforts inland security and for this purpose, he was cooperating with China because he needed Chinese help in certain cases.

Professor Islam further said America had sustained a deficit of two trillion dollars owing to policies of the Bush administration.

The vice chancellor of the SALU, Dr A. R. Malik urged deans of faculties and chairmen of departments to hold such programmes for the benefit of students.

Asad Shah Abidi also spoke on the occasion and chairman of the department of international relations Dr Abdul Majeed Chandio welcomed the participants and scholars.
