FAISALABAD, Feb 23: Work on drainage and water supply projects involving a sum of Rs738 million will be completed within the stipulated period.

A Wasa spokesman told reporters that around 95 per cent work on Elahiabad sewerage project had been completed with an expenditure of Rs19.96 million while Faisalabad water supply, sewerage and drainage project Part-II was also near completion. About Rs295 million were being spent on this project.

He said the emergent sewerage and drainage scheme was being completed speedily with an estimated amount of Rs76.34 million so that problems of drainage and water supply could be resolved.

Special instructions, he said, had been issued to contractors and the officials concerned by higher authorities to complete their projects within the stipulated period. He said that a strict policy had been adopted by Wasa authorities for the use of quality material in these projects, he said.

He further said that water supply schemes of Madina Town and Sarwala Rajba had already been completed. Similarly, drainage and sewerage projects of Nishatabad and Mananwala had also been completed within the stipulated period which was a major achievement of the agency, he added.

ACCIDENT: Scores of people threw traffic out of gear on the main road of Mansoorabad and staged a demonstration against the killing of a minor boy in a road accident here on Wednesday.

A Metro Bus Services bus crushed to death a 6th class student when he tried to cross the road. The area people gathered there immediately and overpowered the conductor. However, the driver managed to escape.

The infuriated people chanted slogans against the district administration. They claimed that reckless driving had become an order of the day, but authorities concerned were playing the role of silent spectators. They further claimed that the bus service management, headed by an influential figure, was playing with lives of the people. The traffic police and Regional Transport Authority functionaries were also helpless in taking action against bus drivers.

The protesters dispersed peacefully on the assurance from the police that their demands would be forwarded to high-ups. Meanwhile, the police took the bus into custody and shifted the conductor to Sargodha Road police station.

ARRESTED: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) claimed to have arrested a human smuggler and recovered 11 passports from his possession here on Wednesday. FIA officials claimed that Amjad Hussain, arrested from his office in Peoples Colony, was involved in sending the people abroad after getting huge amounts from them. The action was taken after receiving a number of complaints against the accused, they said.

RAIDED: A local police team raided a cyber cafe and rounded up 13 youngsters, including owner of the club, at Mansoorabad on Wednesday. Reports said a police team raided the club after receiving complaints about use of internet for viewing vulgar and obscene websites. The police team rounded up 13 boys and sent them behind bars after registration of case.
