LANDI KOTAL, Feb 23: A Senate sub-committee will meet tribesmen on February 28 in Peshawar to discuss changes and amendments to the century-old Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR).

The three-member committee, which was formed in November last year, includes senators Hamidullah Jan, Dr Sayed and Farhatullah Babar.

The committee was formed after Senate had received complaints from political and social organizations about alleged violation of human rights in the tribal areas. The committee members will meet tribal elders, parliamentarians, members of Agency Councils, activists of political and religious groups, journalists and former government servants to discuss the changes.

Senator Hamidullah Jan from the Khyber Agency told Dawn that the meetings would discuss amendments to be brought about to the FCR. He said that the committee found certain clauses in the FCR to be in conflict with basic rights and were needed to be either scraped or amended.

Senator Jan said that the committee would recommend only those amendments which were in accordance with tribal customs and traditions. Meanwhile, councillors from all the seven Agency Councils have convened a meeting in Peshawar on Saturday to devise a strategy for the meeting with the Senate sub-committee.
