Published February 20, 2005

ISLAMABAD, Feb 19: Youm-i-Ashur will be observed throughout the country with reverence and solemnity on Sunday to commemorate the supreme sacrifice rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) to uphold the principles of justice and truth against the tyrant Yazid.

Special prayers will be offered in mosques and Imambargahs after fajr prayers. Tazia, alam and zuljinah processions will be taken out that will terminate at main Imambargahs after passing through traditional routes. Sabeels and medical aid camps will be set up along the procession routes.

Police and other law-enforcement agencies have made elaborate security arrangements for the day. Zakireen, naatkhwans and religious scholars will highlight the significance of the day.

In the evening, sham-i-ghariban will be held in all cities and towns at which scholars will throw light on the philosophy of shahadat offered by the grandson of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions and relatives for the cause of Islam. -Agencies

OUR STAFF REPORTER ADDS: President Pervez Musharraf said on Saturday that Youm-i-Ashur reminded Muslims of the lesson of adherence to truth, firmness of belief and being steadfast against tyranny.

In a message on the Ashura Day, the president urged the nation to reaffirm its pledge that it would maintain harmony, unity and brotherhood in its ranks in accordance with principles of Islam and follow the path of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS).

He said that Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions had set a unique tradition of martyrdom by upholding the principles of righteousness in the face of tyranny. This tradition, he said, would remain a source of strength and inspiration for those who waged struggle against tyranny and repression.

In a separate message, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said Youm-i-Ashura taught Muslims a lesson of sacrifice for achievement of greater objectives. It gave strength and courage against the forces of discord and confrontation. He said evil forces had created disharmony in society to achieve their nefarious designs.
