KARACHI: SHC grants interim bail to engineer in corruption case
KARACHI, Feb 18: The Sindh High Court on Friday granted interim bail to co-accused Javed Akhtar Memon in the vegetable market corruption case.
Applicant, who was engineer in New Fruit and Vegetable Market, was facing corruption charges, among others, in an accountability court.
The prosecution alleged that the accused provided undue financial benefits to construction companies on account of wasteful expenditure and overpayment to them for construction work, causing a loss of Rs29,386,247 through corrupt practices.
Arguing on behalf of the applicant, Khawaja Naveed Ahmed submitted that co-accused was also granted interim bail by the court in the said case. He mentioned that his client remained associated with the project for only 10 months and he was not in a position to extend favour to any party. Therefore, he had nothing to do with the above charges.
SHC's division bench, comprising Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany and Justice Azizullah M Memon, granting interim bail to the applicant with surety sum of Rs500,000 fixed the matter for Feb 25 for the next hearing.
PLEA DISMISSED: The Sindh High Court on Friday dismissed a revision application against bailiffs of district court and upheld the session court order. Mohammad Nafees moved High Court against the order of Additional District and Session Court, which imposed a fine of Rs1,00,000 on him on filing a false application against bailiffs of the District Court South Karachi and others.
The applicant submitted that bailiffs Mudasar, Akbar Shah, Sham Lal, Mustaqeem, Mohammad Arif on directives of one private person Furrukh and SHO Kharadar committed fraud and malafidely produced fake documents before the court in execution of decree in a rent case.
Opposing the application, respondents counsel Naimat Ali Randhawa contended that his clients are bound to obey the order of the court and they work within the limits of law. He also supported the Session Court order imposing fine on the applicant in the sum of Rs100,000.
SHC's single bench, comprising Justice Mohammad Afzal Soomro, after hearing arguments from both sides rejected the application and upheld the Sessions court order imposing Rs100,000 to be paid to respondents. -PPI
