ISLAMABAD, Feb 17: Federal Minister for Water and Power Liaquat Ali Jatoi has directed to encourage the development of hydel-power projects and approved seven raw hydel projects with 1,799 MW capacities for inviting expression of interest through press from the private sector.

These projects would also be presented in the road shows of Dubai and London, he added. According to a press release issued here on Wednesday, the decision was taken during 51st meeting of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) here with the federal minister for water and power.

To encourage the development of coal reserve, the board has decided to extend the date for submission of expression of interest for 450 MW coal-based power project at Lakhra. The board also approved issuance of LoI for a 200 MW coal-based power project at Sonda Jherruk subject to fulfilment of certain formalities.

The board has decided that the Wapda should provide all information to PPIB pertaining to Sukkur power project for carrying out international competitive bidding to set up a power project by the private sector.

The minister also emphasized that wherever pipeline quality gas is available for setting up of private power projects, international competitive bidding will be carried out.

The board discussed the actions in hand for the international road shows in Dubai (Feb 20, 2005) and London (March 2, 2005) to attract investors for investing in three mega power projects.

The projects are; 450-500 MW Uch-II based on low Btu gas from Uch gas field, 450 MW dual fired project at Faisalabad and 350 MW dual fired project near Lahore. The board emphasized that all efforts should be made to make these road shows a success.
