HYDERABAD: Policemen deny having arrested JSMM leader

By Our Correspondent

HYDERABAD, Feb 17: The RPO of Hyderabad region, the SP of investigation wing, Hyderabad, and the SHO of Jamshoro police station in their statements before the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad , on Thursday denied arrest or detention of Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz vice-chairman Samiullah Kalhoro.

Sindh Additional Advocate General Masood A. Noorani submitted the statements of the police officers in the court. The RPO stated that he had discussed the matter with the SP investigation who had expressed his unawareness about detention of Mr Kalhoro.

The SP said he was unaware about the arrest of Mr Kalhoro and that no officer namely DSP Zulfikar Arain was posted in the Hyderabad investigation wing. He, however, added that one sub-inspector Zulfikar Arain was selected for intermediate school course video letter dated Oct 23, 2004. He said the SI was not working in the investigation wing because he had also been relieved from investigation for medical check-up/fitness on Oct 22, 2004.

The SHO also denied having detained Mr Kalhoro at the police station and said allegations levelled in the petition were false. He said Mr Kalhoro was not wanted in any criminal case by the Jamshoro police and he was not an absconder.

Hujjatullah Abbasi, brother of Mr Kalhoro, had filed the petition, stating that on Nov 30, 2004, while he was sitting with Mr Kalhoro, two persons, who were in civvies, came at the central workshop of Sindh University Colony and talked to Mr Kalhoro.

After some minutes, he further said, another private car reached there and three police officers and two plain clothed personnel came out of the vehicle. He identified two of the police officers as DSP Zulfikar Arain and the SHO of the Jamshoro police station.

The petitioner said Mr Kalhoro was forcibly taken away in a police mobile to an undisclosed place. He said university authorities had been informed about the incident and he had met police officers concerned and tried to know whereabouts of the detainee but to no avail.

He pointed out that Mr Kalhoro was on duty when he was taken away without permission of university authorities and said his family members were worried about his life.

He added that not a single case was registered against the detainee at any police station. He prayed the court to order production of the detainee along with record of cases, if any, pending against him. The petitioner's counsel sought time to file a rejoinder to the statements of the police officers.

The complaints have been forwarded to the Karachi office of the bureau, seeking permission for investigation in to the matters, it is learnt through a NAB source. The source declined to disclose number of applications and names of accused and complainants.
