KARACHI, Feb 14: The legislative committee of the PPP Parliamentarians in the Sindh Assembly on Monday cautioned the provincial government against fragmenting Hyderabad to the advantage of its coalition partner.

The meeting was presided by the leader of the opposition in the Sindh Assembly, Nisar Khuhro, who termed it a conspiracy to polarise society at the grass-root level and generate clash among the people at district and lower level.

Attended by Makhdoom Jameeluzzaman, Dr Sikandar Mandro, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Shazia Marri, Nuzhat Pathan, Dr Jam Mahtab Dahr and Syed Irfan Ali Shah, the PPP's legislative committee demanded that such anti-Sindh conspiracies be stopped and warned that if Hyderabad was fragmented to please a particular group, the PPP would resist it with utmost power.

The committee also deliberated on the LBOD and Chutyaryoon dam and deplored their substandard construction. It also criticized the government for raising demand for more funds for the projects and also criticized the thinking and policies of WAPDA. It was also of the view that all those who were responsible for the loss be held accountable.

The meeting also expressed concern over reintroducing the contract system for allowing fishing in the coastal areas and accused the government of going back on its commitment to the fisher-folk.

The PPP also criticized the chief minister for continuously pushing for a policy vis-à-vis Hyderabad which was detrimental to the interests of Sindh. It said the government action was against the people of Sindh because on the one hand five districts were merged to form a city district government in Karachi, whereas much smaller cities were being divided to suit an ethnic group.

The meeting also welcomed the rejection of Kalabagh dam and other such projects by the various political parties and social groups in Punjab and called upon General Pervez Musharraf to respect will and aspirations of the people. It also demanded that the government should publicly declare it was not constructing Kalabagh dam.
