KARACHI, Feb 14: The University of Cambridge International and the British Council organized a ceremony to award certificates, shields and cash prizes to Pakistani students belonging to the Sindh-Balochistan region for their performance in different foreign examinations.
The ceremony was held on Monday here at the British High Commission premises. As many as 46 candidates from different educational institutions of the region, including one from Balochistan, were given certificates, glass trophies and cash awards for exceptional performance at Karachi, Pakistan and World levels in the Cambridge International Examinations (O and A-levels), while another 22 were given certificates for being high achievers in different Edexcel International and Association of Chartered Certificate Accountants (ACCA).
The British Deputy High Commissioner Hamish St Clair Daniel was the chief guest of the award ceremonies, while the regional manager of the Cambridge International Education (CIE) for the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan, William Bickerdike, handed over the certificates to high achievers of A and O levels.
Two students of the Karachi Grammar School, Waqas Jawaid and Danish Munir were awarded a cash prize of 1000 pounds sterling with certificates and glass trophies, for gaining the highest marks in their respective categories in the country.
Mr Daniel congratulated the students and said that the British government offered a credible recognition to tertiary education and welcomed the students from other parts of the world.
Since elections are around in Britain, the migration had once again become a topical issue, he added, saying that about 189,000 applied for the British visa from Pakistan last year, out of which about 100,000 were students.
British Council Karachi Director Charlie Walker said that the number of Pakistani students appearing in the CIE had been increasing. He said about 8,000 Pakistani students had appeared in A-level examinations last time. According to an official list, the top achievers are as follows:
