WASHINGTON, Feb 14: The US on Monday asked its ambassador in Nepal to return to Washington for consultations. India and Britain have also recalled their envoys from Nepal to hold consultations on the changed political scenario in the kingdom.
The US action - coming two weeks after Nepal's King Gyanendra assumed absolute power - is seen in Washington as an expression of displeasure over this development.
In a statement, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher decried the deteriorating conditions in Nepal, including the arrests of several pro-democracy activists, since the Feb 1 power grab by King Gyanendra.
