KARACHI: Old NICs valid for lease, Orangi people told

KARACHI, Feb 13: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan has asked the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) to change its attitude towards the residents of Orangi Town.

Inaugurating two lease camps in sector-14 of Orangi Town on Saturday, he said that residents of this town were as patriotic as any other citizen was. So, he argued, there was no point in questioning them about the date of their arrival in Pakistan.

He maintained that these people had offered sacrifices for the country and some of them had to migrate twice. He assured the people of the town that the issue would be taken up with Nadra high-ups.

The city nazim announced that deserving people would be granted land lease even if they possessed the old NICs, and advised them to get their property leased as soon as possible. Mr Khan said that as soon as the process of the lease of katchi abadis was completed, development work would be started in the leased out localities.

NEW BRIDGES: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan has renewed his pledge that all katchi abadis existing since 1985, including those falling in the jurisdiction of Railway, would be leased out to their occupants provided that the land in question was legally defined as leaseable. No discrimination in this regard would be resorted to, he declared.

The nazim was speaking at a ceremony held here on Saturday night on the occasion of the formal start of work on the construction of two pedestrian bridges - one near the Duty Free Shop and the other near the Jason Trade Centre - on Sharea Faisal.

The bridges are being built at an aggregate cost of Rs14 million. To be completed within four months, these bridges are being constructed with the cooperation of Gujrat Steel. Jamshed Town Nazim Ahmed Parekh and EDO Transport and Communication Mohammad Tahir Soomro were among those present on the occasion. -PPI
