KARACHI, Feb 11: The City Nazim Niamatullah Khan has said that a "Traffic Management Plan" should be chalked out on priority basis to cope with the problem of traffic jams.

He was chairing a meeting to review traffic arrangements and development projects in the city on Thursday night at the Civic Centre. The meeting was told that the number of vehicles on the city roads was rising at an alarming pace and the city was getting a new car after every five minutes, on the average.

The Nazim ordered to form a plan for the construction of link roads to overcome traffic problems and stressed the need for computerized monitoring system for making traffic security arrangements foolproof.

He said that he would preside over a meeting on Feb 22 to review the recommendations of the Transport and Communication Department regarding linking of the Maulvi Tameezuddin Khan with the I.I. Chundrigar road.

The meeting was told that the traffic police had installed cameras at some spots for vigilance of vehicles' movement. A proposal of uniform number plates and car registration all over the country was also discussed.

Those attending the meeting included EDO Transport Dr Tahir Soomro, DG Mass Transit Malik Zaheerul Islam, SSP Traffic Shaukat Ali, Chairman Transport Committee Hafiz Ahmed Ali and others. -PPI
