PESHAWAR, Feb 9: The Personal Identification, Secured Comparison and Evaluation System (Pisces) installed at the Torkhum checkpoint about two months ago has not been functioning, sources said.

The Federal Investigation Agency installed the system in November for regularizing the entry of visitors and monitoring movement of suspects across the border.

The sources said the system had been dysfunctional from day one, apparently due to frequent power fluctuation and low voltage in the area.

The FIA staff had to maintain record of visitors in logbooks and the computer system had been shut down, an official said.

FIA Regional Director Malik Naveed, when contacted here on Monday, claimed that the system had been shut down about two weeks ago due to low voltage. He said the interior ministry would provide a 22kV power generator soon for the reactivation of the system.

The United States transferred Pisces technology after launching the war in Afghanistan.
