Provinces told to activate peace bodies

ISLAMABAD, Feb 8: The centre has directed the provincial governments to activate peace committees in districts and tehsils to provide better security cover to people during Moharram.

During a meeting, held on Tuesday at the interior ministry to review the security arrangements for Moharram, the provinces were asked for reconciliation with different sects to forge religious harmony.

The meeting was attended by home secretaries of four provinces, police chiefs of the provinces, chief secretary and inspector general Azad Jammu and Kashmir, additional secretary Federally Administered Tribal Areas, acting chief commissioner and inspector general of police Islamabad and other senior official of intelligence agencies and interior ministry.

The meeting presided over by the out going interior secretary, Tariq Mehmood, who has been transferred as the communication ministry secretary.

It was emphasized that the provinces would coordinate with district nazims to ensure foolproof security arrangements during the holy month.

On the occasion the representatives of the provincial governments presented their security plans.

The meeting discussed the overall law and order situation in the country, acts of terrorism, clashes in the Northern Areas and disturbance in Balochistan.
