KARACHI: Postponement of FCS meeting irks fishermen

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Feb 8: The government's decision to postpone the 15-member Board of Directors' meeting of the Fishermen Cooperative Society, called on Feb 7 after a delay of seven months to elect a new chairman and vice-chairman of the society, has perturbed fishermen communities as well as other stake-holders in the fisheries sector.

According to the stake-holders, there is no justification for further postponement of the meeting of the board, which is the highest decision-making body to manage the affairs of the Karachi Fish Harbour.

They maintained that a complete unanimity existed on the nomination of the chairman among the government-nominated and elected directors, but there were differences among the elected directors over the nomination of the vice-chairman.

According to FCS sources, the MQM nominee was expected to be elected for the prestigious post in the Feb 7 meeting of the board, which was postponed on the direction of provincial authorities.

The stake-holders opined that the elected directors should be provided an opportunity to field candidate of their choice by holding the board meeting as soon as possible.
