4.8pc rise in US military expenditure

WASHINGTON, Feb 7: A 2.5 trillion-dollar 2006 budget proposed on Monday by President George W. Bush would cut scores of domestic programmes while boosting defence spending, with a projected deficit of $390 billion.

The proposal, which ignited opposition Democrats, would raise military expenditures 4.8 per cent to $419.3 billion and add eight per cent to the budget for Homeland Security.

At the same time, non-defence spending not mandated by current law, so-called discretionary spending, would be cut one per cent, budget documents showed.-AFP
