KARACHI: Urology clinic opened


KARACHI, Feb 5: An Antenatal Urology Clinic was inaugurated at the Kidney Centre Postgraduate Training Institute. The Antenatal Urology Unit Clinic will provide a much-needed service to people from all parts of Karachi. Besides, it will provide an opportunity for obstetricians, ultrasonologists, paediatricians and paediatric urologists to work together to improve the care of affected babies.

On the occasion, a seminar on antenatal diagnosis of urological abnormalities was held at the Kidney Centre. Leading ultrasonologists of the country expressed their views at the seminar.

Dr Shahida Zaidi gave an overview of congenital abnormalities diagnosed on ultrasound. She said that abnormalities of the genitourinary tract were the second most common group identified on antenatal ultrasound.

Dr Musarrat Hassan briefed the audience on technical considerations that were important when identifying congenital abnormalities especially urinary tract abnormalities.

Dr Tanveer Zubeiri gave a pictorial review of parentally diagnosed anomalies and their postnatal follow up.

Dr Zafar Zaidi, head of the paediatric urology unit at the Kidney Centre, talked about the role of paediatric urologists in early counselling, appropriate investigations and management. He emphasised upon the importance of intervening early when needed to decrease further damage to kidneys.-APP
