LAHORE, Feb 3: The City District Government has constituted 150 teams at union council level to check the sale and use of chemical string and metal wire. The teams are also empowered to take action in case of aerial firing.
Nazim Mian Aamer said at a meeting held at Jinnah Hall on Thursday to review the arrangements for checking flying of kites with metal wire and prohibited string that every team would be headed by the Nazim of the union council and would patrol the area with a police mobile team.
He said those found using metal wire and prohibited string for flying kites or resorting to firing and indecent activities on Basant night would be arrested and cases be would registered against them.
He said he would personally supervise the working of the monitoring cell set up at the Jinnah Hall to oversee the working of the teams. Mian Aamer said a campaign was also being launched to educate the kite fliers about the results of the use of prohibited string.
Flying of kites with metal wire not only disrupted the power supply and damaged Wapda installations and domestic electric appliances but also resulted in electrocution of the kite fliers or those catching stray kites. Stray kites with metal wire and prohibited string cut the throats of motorcyclists, he added.
APP ADDS: Governor Khalid Maqbool has said strict action would be taken against those who will use metal wire for flying kites. He was talking to journalists after holding an open kutchery on the performance of federal government institutions at the Police Training Centre, Chuhng, here on Thursday.
The governor said Wapda and common man suffered millions of rupees loss annually due to the repeated power disruptions caused by the metal wire used in kite flying. He urged the people to realize their responsibilities in this regard and assist the administration in checking the menace.
The governor said Wapda had taken all possible precautionary measures to protect its installations during Basant days. "Events like Basant and marathon provide opportunities of entertainment. People should enjoy such occasions in a positive manner and avoid doing acts which harm the spirit behind the events."
