Younus holds IM Shahzad to draw


KARACHI, Feb 1: Sindh champion Muhammad Younus created a stir in the 27th Friendship House Open chess championship when he held International Master (IM) Shahzad Mirza to a draw to share a point at Russian Cultural Centre on Monday.

Younus put up stiff challenge against experienced Shahzad before they settled for a draw after an interesting contest. The record ten-time National champion Mahmood Ahmed Lodhi carved out his second win in the event when he beat Tafseer Ahmed to collect his second point.

National Masters (NM) Haseeb Ahmed, Sabir Khan, Aziz Faroqui, Mohammad Waqar, Rahat Ali and Nauman also secured their second points. In the other 'A' category matches Aziz Farooqi beat Shahab Ahmed, Sabir Khan beat Imtiaz Ahmed, Rahat Ali beat Faraz Salim, Haseeb Ahmed beat R A Nazim and Muhammad Waqar beat Asad Rampuri.

In the 'B' category Wahab Ahmed beat Sultan Mohiuddin S Rashid Ali beat Mumtaz Ali Sr, Nasim Raza beat Masood Hussain, Badar-us-Salam beat Azizur Rehman, Matloob Ali beat Muhammad Shahid, S Irshad Ali beat Waseem Khan, Arshad Ali beat Moiz, Anwar Khan beat Talib Hussain, Prince Jamil beat Zafar Jamil. In the 'C' category Awad Mirza and Kamran Imran collected their second point. -APP
