Pakistan team for India named

LAHORE, Feb 1: Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF) on Tuesday announced a five-member squad who will take part in the Indian National amateur golf championship being held in New Delhi from Feb 26 to March 3.

The party comprises four golfers and one official, said Rai Aziz Ullah, President PGF while talking to APP here. The team is Dr Aimal Zaman, Waqas Ahmad, Adil Jahangir and Wasim Rana while Fakhar Imam, an executive committee member of the PGF was named manager.

A selection committee also having the services of Col. Zulfiqar Rana, Asad I A Khan, Mahmood Aziz and Taimur Hasan, Secretary PGF thoroughly examined the performance of the players before naming the team, he said.

"The team was named after five rounds of trials which concluded today," said Rai adding "three rounds of trials were held during the recently concluded Governor's Cup and two open rounds were also held."

PGF official said Aimal and Waqas being two top ranked players were exempted from the trials. "The selection process was simple and open based on the showing of players in the national tournaments and in the trials," he said.

Rai termed the team balanced and said a lot of hopes are attached with it in terms of producing desired results in the premier Indian golf activity being participated by their top ranking players.

"We enjoy good track record against Indian golfers which is evident from our achievements against them in the international meets held in Pakistan. We are optimistic that our golfers will live up to the expectations," he said. -APP
