Senate session begins today

ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: Political fireworks over the prevailing unrest in Balochistan are likely when the Senate meets on Wednesday after a 54-day recess. Opposition parties have planned to seek discussion on the Balochistan situation.

The opposition had planned to requisition a Senate session to debate Balochistan but the move was pre-empted when President Gen Pervez Musharraf issued an order on Jan 25, summoning the house to meet on Wednesday at 6pm.

Sources said the opposition would raise the Balochistan issue at the start of the session, which would also mark the inauguration of Raza Rabbani of the Democratic Alliance as its leader in the house. The government is likely to inform the house about the recommendations of a parliamentary committee on Balochistan.
