3 accused in suicide attack case sent to jail

By Our Correspondent

ATTOCK, Jan 30: Three brothers, accused of being involved in the suicide attack on Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz at Jaffar village, Fatehjang, were shifted to Attock District Jail amid security, sources said.

The accused have been kept in separate cells and no visitor is being allowed to meet them. The other accused will also be shifted to Attock District Jail within the next few days.

Superintendent Attock District Jail Mushtaq Awan on Sunday confirmed the shifting of the accused and said security around the jail had been tightened. The police had traced a network of 19 people who were involved in the July 30 suicide attack on Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. The three brothers - Nisar Ahmed, Abdul Basit and Abdul Muneem - were members of a banned religious organization.

ELECTION ARRANGEMENTS: As many as 0.7 million voters in the district will exercise their right to vote during the forthcoming local government elections, Assistant Election Commissioner (AEC) Attock Sardar Mazhar Hussain told Dawn.

He said in Attock district, there were 662,210 registered voters during the 2001 local bodies elections. Over 30,000 new voters are expected to be added to the voters' list after completion of the registration campaign.

He said 770 polling stations would be established on the same sites as during the last polls. However, new polling stations could also be set up with the consent of the district administration and other authorities concerned.

To facilitate women voters in the urban areas, separate polling stations with female staff will be established whereas in the rural areas, combined polling stations will be established with separate booths for men and women.

After the issuance of the election schedule, a code of conduct for candidates would be issued and comprehensive guidelines laid out for carrying out political activities in a peaceful and orderly manner, the AEC said.
