KARACHI: Modern techniques in bypass

Published January 31, 2005

KARACHI, Jan 30: Beating Heat Surgery is rapidly growing all over the world and about 25 to 30 per cent of bypass operations are performed by this technique, as it reduces risk of stroke during surgery.

These views were expressed by experts at a seminar on "Bypass surgery: modern techniques", organized by the Liaquat National Hospital. Delivering presentation on Beating Heart Surgery, Dr Mudassir Dar said that it was a new concept but its implementation was started in 1990s with low mortality rates.

Talking about its advantages, he said that patient was not put on massive heart lung machine thus no holes were made in the heart and aorta, blood supply to the heart was not stopped. "Heart still works and supplies blood to the whole body while being operated upon. Everything is worked on physiological basis," he added.

Dr Mudassir said that the factors leading to another type of bypass operation, Redo Surgery, included lack of awareness of secondary prevention, restarting smoking, no exercise, weight gain and restarting sedentary habits, high cholesterol levels, lack of proper control of diabetes and hypertension.

He said that the Repeat Surgery was a challenge, but volume of this operation had been increased. Inclusion of new techniques and technical skill was the answer of many problems in repeat surgery, he said.

Prof A.J. Naqvi while delivering presentation on "What's new in cardiac surgery" said that application of new concepts and techniques had been greatly aided by advances in medical technology.

"Currently limited access multi-vessel arterial grafting on beating heart is the most desirable and widely publicized procedure," he added. Dr Syed Asadullah Hussaini spoke on arterial grafts in coronary surgery. -PPI
