HYDERABAD: Students to defy order to vacate hostels

By Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Jan 28: Scores of students of the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology staged a sit-in outside the press club here on Friday to protest against an order to vacate the university hostels for three days during a visit of President General Pervez Musharraf to the Sindh University on January 31.

Speaking on the occasion, the student leaders said that hostellers of the Mehran and Sindh universities had been asked to vacate the hostels on January 30 because the president would visit the Sindh University on January 31.

They said that by vacating hostels, 600 students of the MUET alone would be dislocated. They said that if there were any security concerns, the hostel gates could be sealed on the visit of the president. They pledged not to vacate the hostels whatever the cost.

So far there is no official confirmation about the visit of the president to the Sindh University as its authorities have maintained a silence on the issue.

However, impeccable sources told this correspondent that the president was scheduled to inaugurate a hi-tech laboratory in the Sindh University on January 31 and address the faculty members and a select gathering.
