Shahzad's six-wicket haul puts Lions into One-day final

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Jan 27: Devastating bowling by seamer Shahzad Butt, who claimed six wickets, including three in his last over and later a breezy opening stand by openers Imran Farhat and Shahnawaz Malik helped Lahore Lions cruised into final of the One-day Cup beating Hyderabad Hawks by 30 runs on Duck worth/Lewis method in the rain-hit second semi-finals at the Qadhafi Stadium on Thursday.

Shahzad with his tidy line and length finished with six wickets for 36, though belatedly, as the high flying Hawks had collected an impressive total of 257 for nine in the allotted 45 overs.

Chasing the target under cloudy conditions, Lions were well supported by luck as they had just completed the 20 overs' game, which was necessary to apply the D/L method, when the rain started with the score being 113 for no loss.

According to the method, Lions have to score 83 in 20 overs to be declared as winners. Had the match finished before 20 overs, Hawks would have been the winners on their better run-rate in the league matches.

The rain continued forcing the umpires Saleem Badar and Z.I Pasha to finally call off the play at 4pm. Imran (59 not out) and Shahnawaz Malik (36 not out) played aggressively as they maintained a run-rate of above five runs an over scoring 51 in 10 overs and accelerated the pace to plunder 62 in the next 10 overs.

Imran belted seven boundaries in a 67-ball knock while Shahnawaz cracked four fours off 56 balls. Shahzad, who had taken three wickets for 33 in his first spell of seven overs in which he conceded 33 runs, came back in the 44th over for the second when Hawks were in sound position of 248 for five.

But Shahzad first took the prize wicket of Hawks' skipper Faisal Athar off his second ball, when he was just two runs short of century. Shoaib Leghari (one) and Hanif Malik (three) were the next victims of Shahzad off the last two. Shahzad was adjudged as Man-of-the-Match and received his cash prize of Rs10,000.

Imran Farhat sent down the final over of the innings and removed Kashif Raza to finish with two for 42 in seven overs. Faisal, who hit 12 boundaries in 125 balls's knock, rebuilt the innings with two big partnerships after Hawks made a shaky start losing three wickets for 55 in 11 overs.

Faisal with Hanifur Rehman (47, three fours, three sixes, 39 balls) put on 69 runs for the fourth wicket. After Hanif's departure Faisal found another reliable ally in Rizwan Ahmed (57, seven fours, 39 balls) to register the biggest partnership of the match of 123 for the fifth wicket. Lions will meet Sialkot Stallions in final at Qadhafi Stadium on Saturday.
