Inzamam and Bari get PCB boss's backing
By Our Sports Correspondent
LAHORE, Jan 27: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar M Khan reiterated that Inzamamul Haq would remain captain of the national team till the West Indies' tour scheduled for May.
Talking to reporters on Thursday, the PCB chairman made it clear that a decision to this effect had already been announced and the board did not find it appropriate to issue clarifications in this regard again and again.
Shaharyar said that there was no controversy regarding venues of the Indian tour as the venues would be finalized in consultation with the Indian cricket authorities. "The PCB and the BCCI have good relations and will take all the decision with consensus," he said.
About PCB's reservation for playing at Ahmedabad, the chairman stressed that there might be some more cities but the itinerary would be finalized with understanding. "We have to see logistic issues and distances among cities after a match so that our team members could get maximum rest during the series," he said.
The chairman said that he would meet Indian counterpart Jagmohan Dalmiya in Dubai during the Asian Cricket Council meeting to be held there on Jan 30 to finalise a number of matters including the itinerary.
He said that the name of new PCB director would be announced within a couple of days and he was only waiting "green signal" from higher authorities. He denied a news report that Saleem Altaf and Iqbal Qasim were only two candidates running for the post.
"There are more names and the contest is not only between Saleem Altaf and Iqbal Qasim," he said. When asked the news was attributed to a key official of the PCB Abbas Zaidi, the chairman said that news was not correct.
He denied that the selection committee and the team management had confrontation like situation over the selection matters. PCB chief said that there was no plan to axe chief selector Wasim Bari.
Asked why the board was forming a adhoc committee while it was going to implement the new constitution of the board till April 30, the chairman said that the adhoc committee was the part of the 1995 constitution and it had no link with the new constitution. Ironically Shaharyar was also working under ad hoc system as the constitution of the board was suspended in 1999.
