GUJRANWALA, Jan 26: As many as 143 women health workers were dismissed from service on the charge of breach of duty on Wednesday.
Reports said the health workers, who were recruited under the National Health Programme on a contract and deputed in rural areas, could not improve their performance despite warnings. On receiving complaints, the executive district officer of health conducted an inquiry and found them guilty of negligence.
TRAFFIC POLICE: The traffic police suspended 1,480 driving licences, cancelled 908 route permits of different vehicles and received Rs73.2 million worth of fine during 2004. This was claimed by Gujranwala traffic SP Dr. Muhammad Azeem Leghari here on Wednesday.
He told Dawn that 380,232 challan tickets were issued on violation of traffic rules during the last year. According to the details, the Gujranwala district traffic police issued 15,693 tickets, Gujrat (59,976), Sialkot (94,504), Narowal (15,790), Mandi Bahauddin (25,742) and Hafizabad (32,327). During the period, 53,503 drivers were arrested.
He said 18,168 vehicles were challaned for over speeding, 45,838 for overloading, 6,057 without lights, 11,514 for wrong-side driving, 4,166 for pressure horns, 22,936 for pollution and 2,850 without registration.
Meanwhile, DIG Chaudhry Altaf Qamar urged the people to abide by traffic rules and help the police reduce traffic problems. Trauma centre: The construction work of trauma centre at the District Headquarters Hospital is expected to be completed within a short time at a cost of Rs11.24 million.
This was stated by DCO Fazeel Asghar during his visit to the construction site. The DCO checked the standard of material. EDO (Health) Dr Zafar Iqbal Niazi and MS Dr Nisar Cheema gave a briefing to Mr Asghar on the technical matters of the centre. They said 95 per cent work had been completed and after the centre's completion the patients of burns would be able to get modern facilities.
SENTENCE: A court awarded life-term and Rs 50,000 fine to a murder convict here on Wednesday. According to prosecution, Mushtaq Ahmad killed Muhammad Manha over some issue on May 30, 2004 at Tatley Aali village.
