KARACHI, Jan 26: A police official fell prey to the continued gang war in Lyari on Wednesday when members of a gang attacked a police party near Baghdadi police station in a bid to get their accomplice freed from police custody.

The police party had earlier raided a hideout of Baba Ladla, an alleged close associate of Rehman Dakait who is ringleader of one of the notorious gangs involved in the weeks long battle, to arrest a wanted suspect.

According to the police, the raiding party could not find the wanted suspect there but picked up one of his accomplices, Faquir alias Lamboo. As the team, along with the suspect, was heading towards the police station, it came under intense firing near Dubai Chowk. The police returned the fire and forced the attackers to flee.

However, during the ambush, Rao Shafique, 27, a head-constable posted in Baghdadi police station, received a bullet in his skull and died on the spot. His body was shifted to the Civil Hospital and later handed over to his family for burial. Rao hailed from Okara (Punjab) and resided in the Civil Lines police quarters.

MURDER: A mother of three was found strangled in her house located in Azeempura on Wednesday. Al-Falah police said that a neighbouring woman went to see Nazeeran, 30, and found her asleep while her infant was crying beside her body.

The visitor got frightened when she failed to wake her up. She reported the matter to the police who reached the spot and shifted Nazeeran to the JPMC where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

The doctors were of the view that the woman might have been beaten up before being strangulated. The police said that her two children were missing. Later, the woman's brother, Mushtaq, appeared before the police and named her brother-in-law, Mohammad Akbar, as suspect.

Police have registered a case against Akbar and were trying to locate him and the two children. Mushtaq told police that Akbar, a mason by profession, had been without a job for the past few months and financial constraints had made their lives miserable.
