Motions on law, order filed in NA, Senate

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Jan 25: Members of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) on Tuesday submitted eight adjournment motions to the National Assembly and Senate, seeking discussion on the "poor law and order situation in the country."

The motions have been signed by various members of the People's Party Parliamentarians (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). ARD Parliamentary Secretary Izhar Amrohvi said the recent terrorist incidents, not only in Balochistan and Sindh but also in the federal capital, had exposed the government's tall claims of foolproof security arrangements in the country.

He said the opposition had decided to "highlight the government's failure in maintaining peace and providing security to the citizens." He said 10 PPP and PML-N members had moved an adjournment motion in the National Assembly seeking debate on the killing of a Kazakh diplomat in the federal capital.

The motion states: "A diplomat of Kazakhstan was shot at by unidentified persons at his residence in Sector F-6/4 on January 18. The diplomat's servant found him unconscious and covered with blood the next day.

The incident proved that the law and order situation in the federal capital is so adverse that even the diplomats are not safe in the town. The issue is of national as well as international importance which has caused grave concern amongst the public, especially in the diplomatic corps in Pakistan."

This motion has been signed by Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Fozia Habib, Nayyar Bokhari, Naveed Qamar, Nahid Khan, Mehreen Anwar Raja, Zamarrud Khan, Khwaja Asif and Tehmina Daultana.

Through another motion, nine ARD MNAs have expressed their concern over the attitude of the police deputed on security of VVIPs in the federal capital. The opposition has highlighted the incident when hundreds of the residents of the capital could not offer Eid prayers at the Faisal Mosque due to extreme security measures as Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz was to offer the prayers there.

The motion has been signed by Sherry Rehman, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Nayyar Bokhari, Nahid Khan, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Zamarrud Khan, Khwaja Asif, Ghulam Murtaza Satti and Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmed.

The motion states: "It has been reported in the press that a number of persons could not offer Namaz-i-Eid on January 21 in Faisal Mosque as the Islamabad police had blocked all roads leading to the mosque and the argument was that the prime minister would offer Eid prayers in the mosque and this was being done for security reasons.

This action was absolutely unfair and uncalled for and caused great difficulties to the people. It also shows that the federal government and Islamabad administration failed to make fair arrangements for the residents of the federal capital to offer Eid prayers.

Similarly, 11 ARD members have moved a motion on the incident in which "a powerful bomb exploded in the provincial secretariat of Balochistan on January 24."

The motion states that this was the second such incident in the same building in less than two months and it has exposed the government's failure to maintain peace despite the fact that paramilitary force has been deployed in the province to check terrorist acts in the province.

The motion has been moved by Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Sherry Rehman, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Khwaja Asif, Syed Khurshid Shah, Tehmina Daultana, Tasneem Ahmed Qureshi, Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Qamaruz Zaman Kaira and Ghulam Murtaza Satti.

As many as 12 ARD members have moved another adjournment motion on the incident in which "a powerful blast on January 18 damaged one of the foundation pillars of a bridge on the Hyderabad Bypass."

The motion says that the incident proves that the government has failed to take steps for the protection of national assets. This motion has been signed by Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Naveed Qamar, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Nawab Yusuf Talpur, Fozia Habib, Khwaja Saad Rafiq, Syed Khurshid Shah, Sherry Rehman, Fahmida Mirza, Tehmina Daultana, Khwaja Asif and Qurban Ali Shah.
