7 die as roof collapses after rain

HARIPUR, Jan 24: At least seven members of a family, three of them women, were killed and four others injured when the roof of their house collapsed in the village of Aldo in tehsil Ghazi, about 32km from here on Monday.

According to police, about 14 family members of Mohammad Afzal were sleeping in a room when the roof built of clay collapsed after a wooden girder supporting the roof broke following heavy rain, killing seven of them on the spot.

Four people sustained injuries while three escaped unhurt. The dead were identified as Mohammad Afzal, his wife Imtiaz Bibi, daughter Yasmin, son Mubashar, Mohammad Ali, son of Yasir Ali, Hajira Bibi daughter of Yasir Ali and Anis Ahmad, son of Mohammad Nafees.

The injured have been identified as Yasir Ali, Shamsa Bibi, Sabir Ali and Wahab Khan, while Pani Jan, Irum Gul and Momina, daughters of Mohammad Afzal, escaped unhurt.

It was reported that daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren of Mohammad Afzal had come to his house to celebrate Eidul Azha together. Area people reached the spot after hearing screams of the injured. The dead and the injured were later taken to a nearby hospital.
