Coach hopeful of players improving rankings

By Our Sports Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Jan 17: Pakistan squash coach Jamshed Gul said on Monday that his aim was to help improve the international ranking of the senior players by October so that they could get good seeding for this December's World Senior Team Championship in Islamabad.

"Shahid Zaman has just won a title in the United Stats while the other players currently in the camp are also doing well," Jamshed told Dawn. A training camp comprising senior and junior players is on in Peshawar at the PAF Complex since the start of the month and will continue till Feb 25.

"We plan to hold four more camps of similar duration during the year besides some shorter ones which will help the players stay in shape." Some of the good-ranked players will compete in a series of championships including the Tournament of Champions, Bermuda Open, KL Open and the Shaikha event, Jamshed said.

"Besides these competitions, all the players will take part in the tournaments at home, the most immediate being the Chief of the Army Staff Championship in Feb-Mar."

There are also plans to provide an opportunity to the players to play in England, Egypt and Malaysia this year so that they could prepare really well. "The players are fully focussed and do not have worry about matters off court for everything is being taken care of by the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF)."
