KARACHI: 5 die in road accidents

KARACHI, Jan 17: Five people died in road accidents in different parts of the city on Monday. A young woman died and her husband was injured near Aisha Manzil, while the two heavy vehicles involved in the accident were torched by mob.

Police said that Zubaida, 40, was going along with her husband Zeeshan on a motorcycle, when a speeding truck knocked them down near Aisha Manzil. As the couple hit the ground another speeding trailer ran over them killing the woman on the spot, while her husband, Zeeshan, who suffered serious injuries, was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment.

The people, who had gathered on the spot, in a fit of anger thrashed the drivers of the errant vehicles before handing them over to police. The two vehicles were gutted, the police added.

A policeman died in a road accident near Sir Syed Girls College in Nazimabad. Police said that Javed Ali was going on his motorcycle when a speeding coaster hit him near the college. He was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The errant driver escaped from the spot following the accident. The policeman was posted at the Khawaja Ajmair Nagri police headquarters. A 40-year-old motorcyclist died in a road accident at University Road.

Police said that Abdul Sattar was on his motorcycle near UK Apartment, old sabzi mandi, when a water tanker knocked him down. He was taken to the Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The errant driver escaped from the spot leaving the vehicle behind.

An old man died in a hit-and-run incident in Nazimabad. Police said that Mushtaq Ali was crossing a main road, when a speeding vehicle knocked him down. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

In a similar accident, a 14-year-old boy died near Shorab Goth. Police said that Sher Zaman was hit by an unknown speeding vehicle. The young boy died on the spot. His body was shifted to the JPMC for legal formalities, police said.

KILLED: A 65-year-old man was killed by armed bandits when he reportedly posed resistance to them in North Nazimabad. Police said two armed suspects took away Rs15,000 from Hafeezur Rehman of Block-B and shot him before fleeing with looted money.
