Singapore claim 2nd Tiger Cup trophy

SINGAPORE, Jan 16: Singapore claimed their second Tiger Cup football trophy on Sunday, beating Indonesia 2-1 in the final's second leg to wrap up a 5-2 aggregate victory.

Indra Sahdan Daud's early strike and Agu Casmir's first-half penalty put the final out of the reach of Indonesia, also runners- up in 2002 and 2000, who lost last week's first leg 3-1 in Jakarta.

The visitors, who had romped through the group stages of Southeast Asia's premier international competition with 17 unanswered goals, had a second-half consolation strike from Eli Aiboy.

Daud gave the home side the perfect start in front of the National Stadium capacity crowd when he cashed in on a defensive lapse to score in the sixth minute of the match. And when Daud was brought down from behind inside in the box five minutes before the interval, fellow striker Agu Casmir stepped up to score from the penalty spot.

Indonesia's consolation came when Eli Aiboy slammed the ball into an empty net in the 75th minute after Kurniawan Dwi Yulianto had done all the hard work against Singapore goalkeeper Lionel Lewis. But it was hardly a contest as the Singapore midfielders kept a tight leash on the proceedings and never allowed the Indonesians to build any worthwhile attacks in the first half.

Trailing by two goals after the first leg, the Indonesians had promised a comeback similar to the one they had staged against Malaysia in the semi-finals. But that never materialised and Singapore romped home without much trouble, despite having skipper Aide Iskandar was sent for his second book able offence near the end.

It was Singapore's second victory in the Tiger Cup, a biannual tournament which has been played since 1996, after they also won in 1998. Indonesia had to be content with second place for a third straight tournament.

Malaysia finished third, having beaten Myanmar 2-1 in Saturday's play-off. The fair play trophy also went to Malaysia, while Singapore goalkeeper Lewis was declared player of the tournament. -AFP
