Boro and Everton battle to Riverside draw

LONDON, Jan 16: Middles brough and Everton cancelled each other out in an entertaining 1-1 Premier ship draw at the Riverside on Sunday.

Boudewijn Zenden's goal on 26 minutes looked to have given Boro the points to leapfrog Liverpool into fifth but Everton, inspired by late substitute Duncan Ferguson, shared the spoils after Tim Cahill's strike on 76 minutes.

Boro took the lead when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's through ball eluded several defenders and Zenden chipped cutely from the angle over the advancing goalkeeper Richard Wright.

The score line was tough on Everton, who had seen good early saves by Mark Schwarzer deny both Lee Carsley and Marcus Bent. New signing James Beattie almost opened his account on the 64th minute when his scrambled effort bounced agonisingly to safety off the post.

But Ferguson was on the pitch for just 75 seconds when his neat header found Cahill who slammed home from four yards to earn the Mersey siders a deserved share of the points. -dpa
