Vaughan fined match fee for umpire outburst

JOHANNESBURG, Jan 16: England captain Michael Vaughan has been fined his entire match fee for comments made about the umpires in the third Test against South Africa, match referee Clive Lloyd confirmed on Saturday.

Vaughan was unhappy with the decision of umpires Steve Bucknor and Aleem Dar to end the second day's play on Friday 13 overs early because of bad light. "We felt we were batting in differing conditions when we came off earlier in the day," Vaughan told reporters.

"We would still like to be out there batting. "All I ask for is consistency, and we don't think the decisions have been made with consistency today." Lloyd charged Vaughan under sections of the International Cricket Council's code of conduct relating to the "showing of serious dissent at an umpire's decision" and for criticising an umpire's decision in public.

"As the captain, Michael Vaughan should be aware of his duties and the rules under which he is playing. It is a serious offence to make such comments about the match officials," Lloyd said in a statement. Vaughan was summoned to a hearing after play on Saturday. -Reuters
